Brock Meier presents at Historical Novel Society Conference
28 JUN 2025, Caeser’s Palace, Las Vegas NV
Brock Meier joins select panel of NYT Bestselling authors
The conference session “Immersive Worldbuilding” hosted five authors, including Brock. Two of the authors presenting their work alongside Brock were the conference “spotlight authors” (pictured above): Fiona Davis ( The Lions of Fifth Avenue) and Sarah Penner ( The Lost Apothecary). Both authors are three-time NYT Instant Bestsellers. The other authors reading were: Anna Rasche, and Cynthia Reeves.
For his reading, Brock chose a scene from his award-winning novel The Stone Cutter, where the protagonist Nahor/Shamir and the gem-trader’s daughter Tenicca are returning from China to her hometown in India. The scene depicts them on board their ship, in the Bay of Bengal, with implications of how their relationship might unfold. The scene is full of world-building sights, smells, and palpable feelings.
From the conference schedule: “The five authors will give 4-minute readings from their books—scenes that transport the reader so fully to another time and place, the setting itself feels like a character. The readings will be followed by a Q&A (moderator: Susan Moynihan) in which the authors discuss the craft of writing these scenes effectively across a variety of historical subgenres.”
Brock’s reading was warmly received and applauded, with authors in the audience greeting him afterward and complimenting him on the scene.
